October 2006

15/10/06 - Sunday 15th October 2006
"I'm so busy, my head is spinning..."
So
the summer is officially over and the world of academia comes starkly into view,
but what a summer it has been...
Firstly, after the rush of exams and
the 3 weeks of playtime at the end of the third (and last) term of 1st year, the
summer back home began by a couple of weeks in Düsseldorf, Germany, where I
spent two weeks "als Praktikant" in a small "Übersetzungsbüro"
(translation office). This was extremely rewarding, both in terms of academic
practise and also the socialising with family and friends, not to mention
soaking up the summer - fever which had set in (with the arrival of the Kirmes -
the annual fair).
After
that little break from the not-so-dull weather in England, I had two weeks in
which I designed and built the cowleylanguagecollege.org.uk website, which was
also extremely rewarding, both financially and artistically. It also gave me the
excuse to venture into the college to see how things had changed since I last
set foot in the listed building, that is Cowley block. After that I filmed a
fabulous wedding in London, helped old clients maintain their website, went for
a family holiday in Barcelona and Sitges on the coast of Spain and had a
generally busy, but fabulous time.
After all the business of the
summer, you would think one would have a nice relaxing start to the new academic
year. No such luck. After working 4 shifts behind the SU bar, totally 27 hours!!
I was very tired indeed. Add to that the leaking ceiling in our lounge, which
renders one bathroom useless till a plumber can arrive, and you have the
workings of a perfect week(!) Then again, I should also possibly mention the
clashing seminars which are a pain in the neck (to be frank) and the buses to
and from campus that either take far too long to get there, don't come at all,
or do come and say not-in-service in joyful orange text that flashes
(neon-light-style) in your face - rendering you late for work/lectures!
All
in all though, the course has started off well, with myself trying to be
organised, by anally ordering all of the my documents folder with
time/date/module number etc. (It's really quite fun when you get into it!) The
social life is back on after the lack thereof in St. Helens, with the
WarwickSnow-organised "Avalanche" being one of the highlights (or maybe it is
mentioned specifically so I can place the photos of it neatly within this blog).
And, whilst I'm very busy, I still get the opportunity to catch the Corrie
omnibus and watch the demise of Fred Elliot - I say, Fred Elliot.
Until Next Time...
